District 2 Commentary Florida's second congressional district (CD2) has the largest landmass with over 11,140 square miles. Located in northern Florida it is spread across two hundred miles east to west and one hundred miles from the state line to the Gulf of Mexico! It has two time zones, the longest coastline and borders on two states. There are sixteen counties (parts of four) represented by the CD2. The state capital, two major universities and the area's largest urban sector are located in the middle of the district. Four community colleges and a university branch campus serve the other urban areas and the outlying regions with advanced educational opportunities. The beautiful gulf beaches provide both national and international tourist destinations. A major river, the Apalachicola, has an important ecological and economic impact on the region and requires cooperation for management from three states and the federal government. The health of this river is vital to the famous Apalachicola oyster industry! The federal lands which include national forests and seashore holdings add to the overall preservation of our states' natural resources. Two military bases are located along the western district coast and serve a vital role in our nation's homeland security. Also, the economic health of the local communities relies greatly on the presence of these two military bases. The vast timberlands, numerous fresh waterways and a wide-open countryside provide our people with some of the most beautiful scenery in our state. Wise land-management by all governmental agencies is critical to maintaining these valuable resources. Federal funds that come into this district provide another vital role, not only to the region but also to the state economy as a whole. A new international airport and expanding seaport are positioned to have an even larger impact on the district with more jobs and opportunities for positive growth. Federal funds have played a critical role in these developments and will be needed for future expansion. Local, state and federal governments all work together for the success of these large projects. Your representative from the Second Congressional District will have many important issues at hand when the new Congress convenes to discuss what environmental and economic impact will have on the future of the Panhandle. I want to be the new representative from our district to serve on new committees, work with new congressional members and bring new ideas for our future. |
